Why update your browser?

Whichever browser you use, it is desirable (read mandatory) that you have the latest version. Here are some explanations and the procedure to follow:

Security

Several security flaws are eliminated every time the browser is updated. In general, these vulnerabilities are not classified as critical, but the upgrade is still recommended by the software publisher. Modern browsers let you take advantage of new security features such as anti-phishing alerts if you visit a fraudulent site.

Meeting the standard

In theory, a web page should display exactly the same way, regardless of the browser used to view it. In practice, this is rarely the case. The W3C (Web Consortium) the body that governs the rules for the Web has enacted standards governing the display, but not all publishers respect them.

How do I know what version my browser is using?

Whatever browser you use, you can know the version and whether you need to update it. To help you, here is the procedure to follow depending on the browser you are using.

Internet Explorer / Edge: After starting your browser, click on the “?” in the menu bar, and then select “About Internet Explorer”. The window will appear, indicating the version of the browser you are using.

Firefox : After starting Firefox, click the “?” symbol in the menu bar, then click “About Firefox”. A window will appear, indicating the version of Firefox you are using.

Safari : After starting Safari, click on « Safari » in the menu bar, then select « about Safari ». An information window will appear indicating the version of Safari you are using

Chrome : After starting Chrome, click on the key or square icon (3 horizontal lines) in the menu bar, and then select “About Google Chrome”. An information window will appear indicating which version of Chrome you are using.

How do I update my browser?

This will also depend on what browser you use.

Internet Explorer / Edge: This is not done from a function built into the software, you must use the Windows Update service. This service is usually accessible from the Windows Control Panel.

Firefox: After the launch of Firefox, click on the "?" in the menu bar, then select about Mozilla Firefox. An information window will appear, indicating the version of Firefox you are using. The update check is performed automatically. If a new version is available, click the "Apply Update" button.

Safari: This does not take place from a function built into the software, you will have to use the software update of the operating system. Use the Apple Menu then "Software Update" If a new version of Safari is available you will be prompted to download it.

Chrome: After launching Chrome, click the key or square icon (3 horizontal lines) in the menu bar, and then select About Google Chrome. The update check is performed automatically. If a new version is available, click the "Restart" button to complete the update.
